The marketing of color

In response to Matt’s post about color, Mary Ferrara remarked that her own chromatic gravitations are to oranges and greens.

Mary wonders why these particular colors are so dear to her heart.

Matt responds:

Mary, I used to be surprised at the passion that people have when it comes to the manifestations of color.  Not so any more, after almost 28 years as an artist.

It might be a genetic concept.  It may come from early education, culture, background, nationality...  or maybe it’s as simple as the fact that your grandmother or grandfather liked a certain color...

It’s definitely a part of the human condition, and I find it’s not passive, by any means.  It’s a very active, passionate manifestation.

I believe that when we look at advertising, we can see the really inquisitive feeling that is in a company’s marketing, in terms of colors finding particular markets.

I don’t know this for a fact, but I would think there would be a great storehouse of published or unpublished information about color, marketing, and why people do things in response to color.

Thanks for your comment, which gives me something to ponder as I throw one color on top of another and watch it turn into a third!

Matt
