Routine versus spontaneity

A reader asks whether Matt likes the regularity of a routine or enjoys living more spontaneously.

Matt responds:

I love a routine so I can always find my watch, my glasses, and my teeth!  If I don’t put them in the right place, I don’t know where the hell they are!

When it comes to breaking routine, I’m like a spoiled child.  Every time I do my dip, I change the procedure so that I know one thing should have gone in last, but I’m going to put it in first!

I’m in my secret garden, throwing gasoline on the flowers instead of water, delighting when they’re starting to wilt so I can see them go through a metamorphosis and I can secretly observe and try to duplicate in my quest for finding the unknown space within myself.

So any kind of a trap that I can put myself in, gives me great joy.

As I get older, I always have to keep in mind that everything has a consequence.  It’s pretty hard walking when you’ve forgot your left shoe!

But eventually you realize you must’ve done something wrong, and you look down and discover the mistake you made.

So I cherish routine, and I crave and delight in serendipity and the spontaneous change.  I look forward with great to delight to unexpected consequences.  It brings me back to my childhood.

Is that a contradiction or an enigma?  Probably, but I believe all life is a contradiction and an enigma.  Most things have unintended consequences.  When you strike a match and light a firecracker, don’t be surprised when it explodes!  Just be sure that you throw it out of the way so you don’t have any permanent reminders of it!  Just call me “Lefty!”
