A reader asks whether the spirits that inhabit Matt’s paintings speak with the same voice or different voices in different languages.
Matt responds:

The spirits are very mysterious.
They speak in many ways. It’s like the piercing of silence, so it doesn’t really make any sense in this world.
I believe what it is, is a constant opening of a window that you didn’t know, closing a door you didn’t know was there, coming upon a space you’ve never been to before, and the revelation of ten different ways that it could be seen.
I would say some spirits are very prescriptive, like “Yes!” and “No!”
But most are very mysterious. You have to make your own pronouncement.
I have become convinced that the whole situation of where we are here, is not about victory or defeat; it’s not about whether we’ve done it or didn’t do it; it’s about the voyage: Are we still moving, no matter what? Have we been discouraged? Have we given up, have we become disillusioned, do we think we don’t matter?
All the negative forces are trying to tell us that we do not matter—that what we do is all bullshit.
The spirits are constantly dragging us toward what our real purpose is, and in many cases, it makes no sense in this dimension, but it makes complete sense in the other dimension.
I believe in one way, shape, or form, the message is consistent, which is: Don’t worry about it, don’t doubt, just do. Keep yourself moving, or we’ll kick your ass. Shut up, keep talking, listen, proclaim. You’ll never be wrong in trying, so pick your metaphor. None of it really makes sense, but all together, it makes all the sense in the universe.
Welcome to the world of the spirits: confusing, informing, dumbing, but completely logical at some place and some time.
Don’t look for answers; open yourself to possibilities. The answers will emerge, like flowers from the ground.
